The life cycle of the silkworm begins when the female silk moth lays eggs. The female moth lays an average of about hundreds of eggs at a time. From those eggs hatch tiny little black caterpillars. These little black caterpillars grow by eating leaves and go through four different stages of growth called molts. Molting is the process by which the caterpillar sheds its skin. When they have gone through the process of molting for the fourth and final time, these caterpillars spin a cocoon of silk around themselves to transform into a pupa. The pupa exits the cocoon and then transforms into the moth. The moth then lays the egg and the life cycle continues.
