REFERENCE | DESCRIPTION | HOW SRILA PRABHUPADA USES THE VERSE |
BG 18.54 - SB 4.30.20 | A person who is transcendentally situated has no lamentation and hankering and they exhibit equality to every living entity. In this stage, pure devotional service is possible. | Srila Prabhupada is explaining how svarupa can be realized. He says that once one reaches brahma-bhuta, or becomes one with the Absolute, that is the beginning stage for realizing svarupa (or self-realization). |
BG 5.18 | Those who have true knowledge see every living entity with equal vision- as the part and part of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. | Srila Prabhupada explains how the concept of equality is important to be understood in order to understand svarupa. Using this verse Srila Prabhupada explains how in this material world people have all kinds of designations (Indian, American, girl, boy, rich, poor, etc.) when in reality everyone is equal because they are all part and parcel of the Lord. |
Cc. Mad 19.170 | All of the senses should be engaged in the service of the Lord, and when one renders service in such a manner they are (1) free from material designations and (2) their senses are purified. | Using a line from this verse, sarvopadi vinir muktam, Srila prabhupada explains how it is important to be free from all material designations. |
BG 2.11 | Those who are truly situated in knowledge know not to lament for the living or the dead because they know that the living entity lives eternally as the spirit soul. | Srila Prabhupada uses this verse to explain how those who identify with svarupa (or are self-realized) do not care for the body because they know that the body is temporary but the soul is eternal. He explains that once one identifies with svarupa, then they attain mukti. |
SB 2.10.6 - BG 4.35 | When the living entity merges with Maha Vishnu, the comsin manifestation is winding up. Liberation is when the living entity is situated in its constitutional position after giving up the material bodies. | To make his previous statement clearer, Srila Prabhupada uses the last line of this verse, svarupena vyavasthiti, to give proof that liberation, or mukti, is being situated in the constitutional position (which is svarupa). |
BG 14.26 | When one engages in constant, unalloyed, devotional service then they automatically transcend the modes of material nature and rise to the state of Bramhan. | Srila Prabhupada explains that those who perform devotional service are self-realized. |
BG 18.42 | Qualities of a brahmana are: peacefulness, self-control, austerity, purity, tolerance, honesty, knowledge, wisdom and religiousness. | Using this verse, Srila Prabhupada explains how these qualities are of first-class people from the material world but he stresses that that is not actually self-realization. Here he points out the difference between a bramhana and a vaishnava. (Vaishnava being one who is self realized and performs loving devotional service). |
Brs 1.1.11 | Explains the definition of pure devotional service:
| He uses the verse to explain how a person who is greater than a bramhana is one who follows this definition of pure devotional service. He uses the line from this verse, anukulyena krsnanu silanam, to explain how it is important that devotional service MUST be performed favorably to Krsna. |
SB 10.84.13 - BG 3.40 | Those who think that the body is permanent, who that the expansions of the body are kinsmen, who consider their land of birth as worshippable, and who go on a pilgrimage just to take a bath are known as lowly animals. | Srila Prabhupada uses this verse to explain how mukti is like a change of consciousness. He explains how in this verse it is explained how the living entity thinks, “this is my body, these are my children, this is my country, etc.” Prabhupada explains how one needs to shift their consciousness so that they ultimately see everyone as a part and parcel of Krsna, and how that mentality described in the verse is what is actually opposite to Krsna consciousness. |
BG 9.14 | Great souls perpetually chant Krsna’s glories, endeavor with determination, and bow down before the Lord. These people are known as great souls. | After using the previous verse as reference, Srila Prabhupada uses this verse to describe how those in Krsna consciousness are always thinking about Krsna, satatam kirtayanto mam. He says that that is how Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and all his associates acted in Krsna consciousness. |
Cc. Mad 17.186 | Dry arguments of the people who have simply studied are useless. Real knowledge lies in those who are self-realized. The best math to follow is the path laid out by the mahajans or the self-realized predecessors. | After having previously mentioned Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and the Goswamis, Srila Prabhupada is encouraging that everyone follow in their footsteps. He uses this verse as reference, that we should follow the path chalked out by the mahajans. |
SB 5.5.2 | The path of liberation from material bondage can only be attained by rendering service to spiritual personalities. (Whether you wish to follow impersonalist philosophy or Krsna conscious philosophy this is necessary). These mahatmas have the following qualities:
| Srila Prabhupada uses the phrase mahat sevam, or service to the spiritually advanced person, to further accentuate the point made previously. (He wants those listening to understand that following advanced devotees is important). |
Mangala Charana Prayers | Srila Prabhupada is saying that as gaudiya vaishnavas we follow Rupa Goswami because he follows Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu who is the Supreme Personality of Godhead. |
The reason we did this exercise is to understand how Srila Prabhupada uses a tapestry of references to back everything he says with scriptural proof. In this entire lecture, Srila Prabhupada explains what is liberation, how one can become liberated, and how one can become a devotee and come to the path of self-realization. Also, Srila Prabhupada explains the difference between svarupa and virupa, (or the constitutional position as the soul vs. the material body) and also explains the difference between a brahmana and a vaishnava (one who is the top-most in the material world vs. one who renders loving devotional service to the Lord).
